Either this is a coincidence (hard to believe), or there was massive targeted support for selected teams.

Even individuals attempting to bend the competition’s fairness right on site (e.g. DM9EE) could have been warned on the spot that what they were doing was not OK. I believe the Judging Committee is now under such tremendous pressure that their approach will be reassessed – and hopefully fresher (and smarter) people will be involved in the process. There is also discussion about involving the whole HAM community by publishing all logbooks right after the contest. Still a mystery to me is the stance of the so-called Sanctioning Committee, which approves WRTC hosts and rules, as well as presumably the Judging Committee.

Here are the facts regarding my support:

  • Logistics: Since I traveled from Germany (DL) by car, I had the capacity to transport heavy equipment. I safely drove E77DX and DJ4MX to their site with several hundred kilograms of gear already stowed in my vehicle.
  • Equipment Loan: I loaned my two IC-7851s to N6MJ and KL9A, driving them directly to their airstrip site to minimize any transport risk to the transceivers. I also carried three spare power supplies and rigs, which would have been available to anyone facing a technical failure—just as I did during WRTC 2018.
  • Motivation: Traveling by car allowed us to bypass airline luggage restrictions. As a passionate ham radio enthusiast who was part of the WRTC 2018 media team, I was simply eager to see the sites and get a glimpse of the „pit lane,“ something I will likely never experience as a competitor.
  • The Effort: This was not a leisure trip. After a stressful 10-hour drive on the left side of the road, I spent Friday in extreme heat unloading gear, helping setup a tent, running errands for forgotten lunch bags, and delivering transceivers.

I never hid my activities. I spoke openly with judges, presidents, and participants about what I was doing, and shared updates on Facebook.

Where exactly was the unfair advantage or any wrongdoing? Please let me know.

My short answer:

  • QSO Facts: My 6 QSOs with E77DX/DJ4MX had a negligible impact on their final score. Furthermore, missing them on 40m and 80m cost them 4 potential points. If I were acting as a targeted „cheerleader,“ I would not have missed those contacts.
  • Time of Operation: 12:55 – 16:48 and 10:00 – 11:58 thats 6 hours out of 24 hours…… what a bad effort…
    168 QSOs and no 40m and 80m used…..I had fun anyway….
  • Random Contacts: I also worked stations like JA1BJI and M0CFW. I have no personal connection to them; these „many“ contacts were completely random, contrary to your assumptions and believe in „chance“.
  • Full Transparency: Packing and leaving with E77DX and DJ4MX happened in plain sight. We explicitly informed officials that they would not need the event shuttle because they were traveling with me. Nobody objected or suggested this was a violation.
  • No Bias: If my goal was to manipulate the outcome, why didn’t I make more QSOs with N6MJ/KL9A, who were using my own IC-7851 radios? Surely I would want my own equipment to win.
  • Cluster Spots: My DX cluster spots show that I spotted my entire log indiscriminately, without favoring any specific team.Every logged QSO was spotted automatically. Fair enough ?
  • Online Score Board: I was uploading my score. nothing to hide
  • General Support: I could cheer for every team as I know most of them and they all have my support.

Saturday: driving E77DX and DJ4MX to their site, then rushing to N6MJ and KL9A to wish them well, just before the contest starts…. ask S50A Tine, how close that was…. timely.
On the way back I found a place far out in the fields which looked ideal to set up an antenna and not being bothered by locals and police (we had a police investigation on the motorway the day before ;-).
Close enough to N6MJ and KL9A to work them for sure, but not too close to disturb them with QRM and I remembered there was a cluster of a few stations, so I could reach many WRTC stations from here.
Again, it was for me the perfect place to operate, so I parked there……
Location was in a cluster and I was not even able to find out Dan and Chris callsign, you bet I wished that my TRX would win ? or E77DX and DJ4MX would win, so we have a great happy journey home to DL , 10 hours driving ? You bet. ( we had fun anyway)
So, why is MB4G (N6MJ and KL9A) only with 2 QSOs in my log ? Because I didn’t know their call sign and because I worked EVERYONE I could hear. There is no „picking up my friends only“. Check my log! ( which I uploaded sunday right away)

Again: I tried to work as many WRTC stations as I could.
I operated from here from Saturday 12:55 until my battery died 16:48.
Made that one QSO with 18:26 with MB1T (K5ZD) with my high swr Tarheel or ATAS120 on my way back to the hotel.
So, I was active roughly 4 hours from here on saturday :

On Saturday, on my way back from my QTH near the N6MJ/KL9A cluster, I passed nearby the E77DX/DJ4MX cluster and to be sure that I have them in my log ( yet, I didn’t know their callsign).
I made one QSO, just to find out that my Tarheel mobile antenna had a broken control wire (not Tarheels fault), but because of the high SWR I only managed to work MB1T (K5ZD and W2SC)
you can see it in the upper picture , left side the red box between „6“ (statue on the motorway) and „17“ E77DX QTH. vis-a-vis of a pig farm 🙂

  • The Return Journey: On my way back to the WRTC center, I got lost due to poorly marked detours and an unnotified motorway closure near Cambridge. I spent an hour driving in circles, exhausted and hungry, before finally reaching the hotel.
  • Lack of Insider Knowledge: Back at the lobby, I watched the live screen without knowing the call signs of any participants, friends or otherwise.
  • No Radio Support: I briefly considered setting up a dipole antenna near my room to operate on 80m and 40m, but decided against it due to nearby high-voltage power lines and known noise issues. If my goal had truly been to unfairly support my friends, I would have made the effort to work them on those bands, rather than losing out on those 4 points.

The QSO on saturday was from the other location further east, when the voice was too weak to recognize…
and why haven’t I just worked them on 80m and 40m ? 4 QSOs missed…… bad „non-effective“ cheerleading.
On sunday, I parked my car and set up an antenna,waiting for the end of the contest to pick them up.
And again, I was spotting every station I logged. not just stations I liked. ( I only knew who was MB1I (E77DX DJ4MX) after the SSB QSO on sunday 10:27 when I recognized DJ4MXs voice.
And I worked them as dupe. So I was wasting their prcious time near the end of the contest….maybe I stole them time for 1 valid QSO? Bad me.

You say, 5 QSOs is an unusual high QSO number…..this ist 50% of whats possible.
we shall work as many as we can, and if I hear them, I work them.

They are for sure nice guys, but to be honest. I have no relation to them.
Probably, they where just close to the QTHs where I operated from, THATS the reason they are in my log more often. again: I worked everyone I could hear. My goal was to get as many WRTC stations in my log as I can, during the time being active.

All my clusterspots were done automatically by UCXLog

plus a few manually. Oh, and yes, I think you can tell when I found out, that MB1I is DJ4MX/E77DX,
I didn’t favor anyone in spotting. I didn’t know anyones call, except saturday 10:27 when working DJ4MX SSB.
So, are you critizising 3 manually cluster spots ? THREE ? did this change the TOP 10 Ranking ?
